This artwork is the result of two years of investigation in purchasing a low cost house. It deals with specific aspects of Government subsidised low cost housing developments. The five panels are zones which each express a particular part of the housing scenario. The words swing between conflict and conciliation and become unreadable as the call for millions more houses fall mainly on deaf ears. Each panel represents one Zone.
The teabags are in numerical order from one to one thousand two hundred (as intended for the Goldev area). Apart from location and identification, numerals have great symbolic meanings attached to them:
Panel 1 has Street Names, and Numbers indicating personal ownership.
Panel 2 includes geological investigation into the condition of the land 'Trial Hole Profiles'.
Panel 3 shows financial aspects (loans and subsidies) and consecutive bar coded numbers (which speak of the ‘first world’ ‘third world’ situation in which so many people find themselves, on a daily basis.
Panel 4 contains the poem: Accountable .
We are a society of numbers. Our number is our Identity Little birds living in little numbered nests. Our numbers say who we are Where we live Where we work What we own How much money we have How much we can borrow How many children we have How old we are What we mean How much power we have How little power we have. Some of us have no number Some of us do not even have a nest.
Panel 5 indicates imaginary numbers for plots - homes yet to be built. The resin preserves in it two elements that both have healing properties; Rooibos tea bags and bandages. Each ‘page’ of tea-bags encased in resin, represents a Zone with individual plots and houses. Each deals with a specific related aspect of the housing and land scenario.
A part of this installation were Healing Books - 30 healing art books created from Resin, Steel, Rooibos, Bandages, Text and Mixed Media. They stand on waist high plinths and were arranged in the form of a “township” one could wonder through, in Museum Africa.
